about

This is the first song from our forthcoming album Gold On the Horizon recorded in Portland Oregon with producer Tucker Martine.

This is about the break up of some friends of mine. Me and my girlfriend bought our first apartment, a basement flat in, at the time, unfashionable and more importantly cheap, Peckham in south east London. The two in the song lived next door. We became very good pals and spent most of our spare time hanging out together. They themselves were inseparable. So much that whenever we said one of their names we would alo say the other’s as well as if they were one person.

When they broke up, on account of infidelity on the guys' part, it was incredibly traumatic for both of them. I’d never seen anything like it. It was very hard for us on the sidelines and it was devastating for the two of them. Perhaps because we knew them so well they didn’t hide anything from us and we got a behind the scenes, warts and all tour of a terrible breakup, whether we wanted it or not.

Thankfully both of them are very happy now. The lady, who’s heart was broken, is now in a relationship with a very good friend of mine who’s wife had left him one day and moved to America with no warning at all. They met at one of my gigs.

lyrics

If you’re leaving in the morning
Go before the sun comes up
If you’re leaving in the morning
Go before the bird singing starts

Leave me no words
Leave me no doubt
If you wrote it all down
Throw it all out
Throw it all out

If you’re leaving in the morning
Travel down the quietest road
No one sees you
Passing by
And I won’t have to say to you the reason why
The reason why

You’re leaving in the morning
What about tonight
Do we pretend
That it’s alright
Go to bed like it was any other night
Any other night

If you’re going
I don’t want to fight
I can’t make you stay
But I hope you might
I wasn’t lying when I said
I don’t want to know

If you’re leaving in the morning
Can I have one last dance
And if you still want to meet me
When the music stops
I’ll know my time is up and I’ll call it all off
But you’ve got to dance like it’s the last you’ll ever do
Leave it all out on the floor and leave me screaming out for more

Oh where will I rest my head if it’s not next to yours
Will the end come at last
And swallow me whole

about

Our Man in the Field London, UK

Modern words to a vintage soundtrack…
Think of singer-songwriter Our Man In The Field as an independent correspondent, reporting authentic, thought-provoking stories from his travels. Taking inspiration from the alt-Americana and Caledonian soul stylings, his own sound is indefinable yet familiar - it’s introspective, intimate and deeply soulful. ... more
